InMode · EMS Body Contouring Handpiece

Tone

InMode's EMS handpiece for targeted muscle toning and body contouring. Tone delivers electrical muscle stimulation that induces involuntary high-intensity muscle contractions — building definition, improving tone, and enhancing body contour in areas that are difficult to isolate through conventional exercise alone.

High-Intensity EMSInvoluntary muscle contractions that exceed what voluntary exercise can achieve in isolation
Targeted Body AreasAbdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and buttocks — precision placement for isolated muscle groups
No DowntimeComfortable treatment with no recovery period — patients return to normal activity immediately

Areas Treated

Tone uses electrical muscle stimulation to induce powerful, controlled involuntary muscle contractions in targeted body areas. By placing the applicator directly over the muscle group of interest, practitioners can achieve focused activation that supplements — or in some cases surpasses — the results of targeted resistance training.

Abdomen
Rectus abdominis and oblique muscle toning for improved core definition and abdominal contour. Particularly effective for patients who struggle to isolate abdominal muscles through conventional exercise, or as an adjunct to BodyFX or MiniFX fat reduction treatments.
Flanks
Targeted stimulation of the external and internal oblique musculature to improve flank definition and waist contour. Often combined with RF-based fat reduction treatments on the same area within a IgniteRF combination protocol.
Thighs
Quadriceps, hamstring, and adductor stimulation for improved thigh tone and definition. Effective for patients seeking to improve thigh contour following fat reduction treatments, or as a standalone toning application.
Buttocks
Gluteal muscle activation for improved lift, shape, and definition. Tone provides non-surgical gluteal toning and can be combined with BodyFX for comprehensive body contouring of the posterior. A popular protocol for post-partum body restoration.
Arms
Tricep and bicep toning to address upper arm laxity and definition. Complements Morpheus8 Body or MiniFX treatments for patients seeking combined skin tightening and muscle toning in the upper arm area.

Treatment Parameters

Tone treatment parameters are controlled on the IgniteRF workstation display. Stimulation intensity is patient-guided — increase progressively until the patient reports a strong, visible muscle contraction without pain or significant discomfort. The target endpoint is a clearly visible, involuntary contraction of the target muscle group.

Treatment Area Program Intensity Guidance Session Duration Frequency
Abdomen Toning / Strengthening Patient maximum tolerance 20 – 30 min 2x per week
Flanks Toning / Strengthening Patient maximum tolerance 20 – 30 min 2x per week
Thighs Toning / Strengthening Patient maximum tolerance 20 – 30 min 2x per week
Buttocks Toning / Lifting Patient maximum tolerance 20 – 30 min 2x per week
Arms Toning / Strengthening Patient maximum tolerance 20 – 30 min 2x per week

Treatment Course

A standard Tone course consists of 6–8 sessions, performed twice weekly over 3–4 weeks. Results are progressive — visible improvement in muscle tone and definition typically becomes apparent from session 4 onward and continues to develop over the 4–8 weeks following course completion as muscle hypertrophy consolidates. Maintenance sessions every 4–8 weeks are recommended alongside regular physical activity.

Combination Protocols

Tone delivers optimal aesthetic results when combined with other handpieces on the EmpowerRF platform. A common protocol sequences FormaV (RF tissue warming) alongside Tone to address both tissue quality and muscle activation. This combination approach produces more comprehensive body toning outcomes than either modality achieves alone.

Important Clinical Notes

Ensure good applicator-to-skin contact with coupling gel for consistent energy delivery. Do not treat over metal implants, pacemakers, or other implanted electronic devices. Avoid treatment over bony prominences where muscle mass is insufficient for meaningful contraction. Patients should avoid vigorous exercise of the treated muscle group for 24 hours post-treatment to allow adequate recovery. Mild muscle soreness (DOMS-like) is normal for 24–48 hours after treatment.

FAQs

Common questions about Tone EMS treatment. Contact STERN Aesthetic Solutions for clinical guidance specific to your practice.

Conventional exercise requires the patient to voluntarily activate muscle groups through compound movements, and complete isolation of specific muscles is difficult to achieve without expert coaching. Tone places the applicator directly over the target muscle and delivers electrical stimulation that induces involuntary contractions with a precision and intensity that is difficult to match voluntarily. It is not a replacement for physical activity — it is a targeted clinical tool for muscle definition and toning that complements an active lifestyle, particularly effective for patients with body areas that are resistant to exercise or for post-treatment recovery contexts.
Most patients find Tone comfortable at therapeutic intensities. The sensation is described as a strong pulsing or squeezing feeling — similar to an intense voluntary muscle contraction. Intensity is always titrated to patient tolerance; no anaesthesia is required. Patients may experience a mild DOMS-like muscle soreness (delayed onset muscle soreness) for 24–48 hours after treatment, which is a normal physiological response to high-intensity muscle activation.
Most patients begin to notice improved tone and definition from session 4 onward. The most visible results typically emerge 4–8 weeks after completing the full 6–8 session course, as the muscle hypertrophy response consolidates. Results are influenced by the patient's baseline muscle mass, body composition, and physical activity level. For optimal outcomes, patients are encouraged to maintain regular physical activity throughout and after the treatment course.
Yes. Combination protocols on the EmpowerRF platform are a key clinical strength of the system. A common sequencing approach is to perform FormaV first (RF tissue warming and remodelling) followed by Tone in the same session to activate the underlying muscle group. VTone can also be incorporated for pelvic floor rehabilitation in appropriate patients. Addressing both tissue quality and muscle tone in a single session is more time-efficient for patients and produces more comprehensive outcomes than either handpiece achieves alone.
Tone is contraindicated in patients with implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers or neurostimulators, metal implants within the intended treatment zone, pregnancy, and active skin infection overlying the treatment area. Treatment should not be performed directly over bony prominences or areas where insufficient muscle mass exists to generate a meaningful contraction. Patients with epilepsy or known seizure disorders should be assessed with caution before proceeding.
