Let’s face it, as skincare professionals knowing how to treat our clients skins’ post-summer season is a must-have skill (especially in South Africa). Here are a few tips that will assist you in choosing the correct treatment and product plan for your beloved clients.

Things to keep in mind when treating clients post-summer season:

Environmentally Damaged Skin

Environmentally damaged skin is classified as skin that has been over exposed to environmental factors that result in a form of inflammation in the dermal layer. When treating environmentally damaged skin (not necessarily tanned skin), we need to keep in mind that the skin is already sensitised, therefore a gentler approach may result in a better outcome.

Gentle Resurfacing is Crucial

More often than not, aggressive resurfacing is our first thought when looking at damaged skin. In my experience a gentle exfoliation and resurfacing delivers a more effective result multiple concerns on a sun-exposed skin is involved. A treatment that I prefer to focus on during this season is iS Clinical’s Foaming Enzyme Facial as it provides the perfect homeostasis between gentle resurfacing, hydration and repairing.

Light-Based Devices: Not The Go-To Treatment

Even though I am obsessed with light-based treatments and the results patients can get, you might want to pause with light-based devices such as Lumecca IPL for the time being. Light-based devices often absorbs melanin, which increases the risk of burns and unwanted reactions on tanned or sun-exposed skin. I generally prefer to keep IPL as a treatment option for colder months when the skin has fully ‘recovered’.

Be The Guide to Sun Correction Products

Always remember that patients come to you for guidance. Apart from their treatments, make sure they go home with products that counteract sun-damage. Products containing resurfacing, repairing, tyrosinase inhibitors and anti-inflammatory ingredients are a must! iS Clinical’s Retinol Boosted range is a good option since it contains all the previously mentioned ingredients and more.

Repair DNA Damage

Sadly, we all know that prolonged sun-exposure causes DNA damage. Lucky for us Extremozyme technology came to the rescue! Using products containing the patented Extremozyme technology from iS Clinical will help to not only prevent, but REPAIR damaged DNA and influence DNA communication.

Caring for your patients’ skin is a journey that demands patience (excuse the pun). By effectively addressing your patients’ skin post-summer, you’ll foster healthy client retention and ensure they return for more aggressive treatments in winter.
